Two days ago, Katherine and I watched The Flying Scotsman (2006), which I own on DVD. Neither of us had seen it. The movie is about Graeme Obree, the Scotsman who broke the world hour record twice and won two track World Championships. Obree is now 54 years old.
What makes the story interesting—and poignant—is that Obree had several personal problems. First, he was bipolar, which caused him to go into deep depressions and made him suicidal. (He attempted suicide three times.) Second, despite marrying and having two children, he was gay. (The movie doesn't mention this.) Third, he had to work for a living. Whereas other athletes had expensive bicycles to ride, he had a homemade machine, with parts taken from a washing machine.
It's a great story. I highly recommend the movie. Here is the trailer.
