In 2016, the president brazenly proclaimed that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and wouldn’t lose any votes. To stay in power, he needs the support of single-issue voting groups. Issues such as immigration, abortion, guns, conspiracy theories and the stock market have produced a dependable base of Donald Trump supporters.
And now the “law and order” president is creating a chaotic America in order to keep that support.
Are we becoming a nation of individuals willing to destroy our democracy for the sake of one single issue? Lack of care and consideration for others is replacing compromise and empathy in America.
America is suffering. Over 200,000 deaths from COVID-19, high unemployment, food insecurity, school shootings, kids taken from their families at the border, social justice protests and damaging climate change continue to distress our nation. Meanwhile, the president has been enthusiastically incompetent about solving these problems. Instead, he foments unrest with divisive rhetoric. The overriding theme encompassing these problems is that sometimes the vulnerable need help. The meaning of the term “pro-life” needs to be re-evaluated by Americans.
If we want to truly form a more perfect union in America, pro-life would mean caring about all life and finding solutions to complex human interactions and situations. Respect and civility are absent these days. More regard for empathy, mercy and care toward our neighbors can help heal our suffering nation. Perhaps the time is now for that “kinder, gentler” nation George H.W. Bush called for in 1988.

Note from KBJ: How is President Trump "creating a chaotic America," Phyllis? Are you out of your mind? President Trump is the law-and-order president. It's Democrats who advocate (and create) chaos. Also, President Trump is a uniter, not a divider. Barack Obama was the divider. He injected race into every issue, and always took the side of blacks, usually without knowing the facts. How could you be so wrong about so many things? Don't tell me: you watch CNN.
