Why Joe Biden? Three considerations. First, consider the state of the country since 2015: Unemployment doubled, highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world, exponential growth in climate-related wildfires and hurricanes, and marked increases in domestic terrorist threats, such as the Michigan kidnapping plot.
Second, consider the number of damning reports from former White House officials—John Bolton, James Comey, Steve Bannon, Michael Cohen, Andrew McCabe and others depicting dishonesty, deception, chaos, corruption, divisiveness and abuse of power. Over 100 prominent GOP leaders have endorsed Mr. Biden, including former Gov. Tom Ridge and 73 former national security officials. Fact-checkers at The Washington Post have counted over 20,000 lies and misleading statements from Donald Trump since inauguration. To lie is to mislead. Mr. Trump’s leadership is wanting, as his word cannot be trusted.
Third, consider the alternative: Joe Biden has effectively grappled with each of the major challenges that we face today—the pandemic (H1N1 and Ebola), the economic downturn (the 2009 economic recovery plan), the climate crisis (the Paris climate accord), racial injustice (President Barack Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing) and political divisiveness: As a senator, Mr. Biden crossed the aisle and earned the respect of Republican colleagues (John McCain and even Lindsey Graham). Rabid socialist or police hater? Not even close. As a vice president, he was the bipartisan deal-maker with Congress for the Obama team. A problem-solver with a strong moral compass.
For me, the choice couldn’t be clearer.
