I imagine it took Gov. Tom Wolf but a split-second to burst out in raucous laughter upon learning that a group of Republican members of the General Assembly, led by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, asked him to call a special session to address what they believe are vast election irregularities that caused Joe Biden to inaccurately be awarded a win in Pennsylvania (Dec. 3, “GOP Lawmakers Want Wolf to Call Session on Election”).
Mr. Metcalfe, arguably the most virulent anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-gay member of the General Assembly, has fought every sensible initiative the governor has proposed. He has called for open rebellion, protests in the streets, to challenge the economic restrictions the governor has imposed in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus, which now rages out of control and threatens to overwhelm our hospitals by Christmas.
I believe that every member of the band of Republican insurgents knows that the election results are final and that Mr. Biden won fair and square. They are acting at the behest of constituents who believe anything and everything they are told by the liar-in-chief notwithstanding the fact that election officials and elected officials at all levels, and on both sides of the aisle, have made it clear that there was no fraud that would change the result of the election in any state.
The individuals who display hyperpartisanship in an effort to perpetrate a bloodless coup are not fit to lead and should be ashamed. Thank God we have a governor who is not delusional, a leader who recognizes the law, the Constitution and our democracy.
