Re the July 27 letter “Senators are not Republican enough:” It is appalling that any American citizen would chastise a U.S. senator for lack of “loyalty” to a political party or a president.
The letter’s last paragraph was especially horrific. A call for a senator to be “punished by the president and party” calls to mind the Soviet Union of the 1950s or the Germany of the 1930s or even today’s North Korea. Punishment should only occur when an official has broken the law or collaborated with foreign adversaries.

Note from KBJ: Without loyalty to party, there are no parties. Are you advocating the abolition of political parties, Maritza? Have you thought that through?

Now is the time for Congress to form a special committee to start the move to progress.
I suggest that each party in both the Senate and the House appoint two members of the opposing party as voting members, with Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer in non-voting roles and Vice President Mike Pence as the chair.
The special committee’s purposes would be to fix the Affordable Care Act, revise income tax rules and implement shovel-ready infrastructure programs.
When it finishes—soon, I hope—it can draft an amendment to the Constitution defining term limits for Congress.
Make Congress viable again.
