  • Neil M. GorsuchFederal appellate judge Neil M. Gorsuch has been confirmed by the United States Senate to serve on the United States Supreme Court. He will replace Antonin Scalia, who died a little over a year ago. The Left made ridiculous (and in some cases vile) claims about Judge Gorsuch, some of which implied that the role of an appellate judge is to arrive at certain results (always those approved by the Left) rather than apply the law as written. Admittedly, there are hard cases at law that require appellate judges to draw upon extraneous sources, such as natural law, but the overwhelming majority of cases can and should be resolved by interpreting the law as written. The Left would have you believe that all cases are hard cases. This is result-oriented jurisprudence, which is to say, not jurisprudence at all. Not everything is politics. Judge (soon to be Justice) Gorsuch understands that law is an autonomous institution, with standards, canons of reasoning, canons of interpretation, and methods of its own. As Judge Gorsuch himself put it (I paraphrase), if an appellate judge always likes his or her rulings, then he or she isn't doing the job properly.

  • Here is Ann Coulter's latest column. I have never given the least bit of credence to the idea that Donald Trump or his associates colluded with Russians prior to the election, as a way of keeping Hillary Clinton out of the White House. The story was obviously concocted in the fevered brains of left-wing crackpots who can't come to grips with the fact that the American people took a long look at Hillary Clinton and rejected her. The woman has been everywhere on every topic. She is corrupt, ruthless, incompetent, and unlikeable (for many of us, repulsive). Thank God for Donald Trump! For only the third time in my life (in 11 tries), the person for whom I voted was elected. (The others were Bill Clinton in 1992 and George W. Bush in 2004.)

  • To the editor:

Vegans and vegetarians can and mostly do get along just fine, notwithstanding Brian Kateman’s suggestion to the contrary. (“Can't vegans and vegetarians just get along?” Opinion, April 2)

The stereotypical vegan is often described as preachy, judgmental and bombastic. While some of us are those things, I think that most of us try hard to be true to our veganism without alienating all who are not vegan. The contempt described by Kateman really is at odds with trying to live more compassionately—a goal to which many vegans aspire.

Yes, vegans tend to be a passionate bunch. We have to be to maintain our commitment to sparing animals harm and suffering. But like many vegans, I encourage any effort to reduce the slaughter of animals. From “meatless Mondays” to the “vegan before dinner” diet, I believe that small changes can lead to longtime shifts in how we live.

Alienating folks who are not 100 percent vegan only increases the chance that they never will embrace ethical veganism. To suggest any widespread animus toward nonvegans does a disservice to our movement for a kinder, more compassionate world.
