  • Yesterday evening, Katherine and I watched Crocodile Dundee (1986), which both of us had seen before. This movie is 30 years old. Katherine tells me that the two stars of the movie, Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski, were married to one another for many years but that the marriage may be over. I love the knife scene.

  • To the Editor:

Re “Veiled Bigotry in Germany” (editorial, Dec. 8): I am a woman, a feminist, a Democrat, an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter, the proud mother of a lesbian, a progressive Christian, a supporter of civil rights, a believer that Black Lives Matter, and a welcomer of refugees and other immigrants. Yet because I oppose the wearing of the full Muslim veil in public, which functions as a face mask, you would label me a bigot.

People may feel that masked people in public are vaguely sinister and threatening; one instinctively looks at a person’s face to see whether this is a friend or a foe. It isn’t bigotry.

While the wearing of the veil may be protected speech here, it is not unreasonable to ask people who want to live in open societies to show their faces to the community. This is not bigotry.

  • Bicycle 7Not long ago, I was riding in stifling heat. Today, it was just the opposite: bitter cold. The wind chill was 30º Fahrenheit when I left my house shortly after 11:00. It had risen to 36º by the time I returned, three hours later. I saw only one bicycle and one tricycle in 34.3 miles. If you're wondering whether I was cold, the answer is no. I was properly dressed for the conditions. The extra layers of clothing slowed me down, however. Instead of averaging 16 or 17 miles per hour, I averaged 14.83. Today's ride gives me 5,944.2 miles for the year. I need eight more rides—in 22 days—to break my all-time mileage record of 6,205.9 miles.
