What a shame Greg Abbott, Dennis Bonnen and Dan Patrick have chosen to jump on the hateful, racist Trump bandwagon of fear. This appears to be an attempt to divide the citizens of one of the most successful cities in the world rather than assist a police department with a long history of abuse to improve and truly “protect and serve.”

And, oh yes, not a word about the multiple investigations for abusive behavior by the sheriff’s department in our neighboring Williamson County. Could it be because the citizens of Austin have consistently failed to kiss the boots of the billionaire Texas oligarchs who our so-called state leadership really serve?

It is disingenuous and misleading for Amy Coney Barrett to promise to “apply the law as written.” Cases don’t make it to the Supreme Court when the written law is clear. The Supreme Court only considers those cases where the written law does not unambiguously answer the question before the court.

Note from KBJ: Good try, Nelson. It doesn't follow from the fact that language isn't perfectly clear that it's perfectly unclear. Judge Barrett interprets the law in light of the original understanding of the words used. She doesn't assign just any meaning to the words.

To the editor:

Now some Republican senators are distancing themselves from Trump. They’re like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

These people are asking for our votes. If they had any integrity, they would have voted Trump out during his trial in the Senate after he was impeached.

Had they done that, we would be more inclined to vote for them. But they have shown us their loyalty is not to America, but to the president whose coattails they were riding.

Sorry, guys, you can go down with him.
