The writer of the July 24 letter “Energy Plan” wrote about our president’s support for unions. We know that Donald Trump’s rabid base accepts everything he says, regardless of the evidence proving him wrong, but if they would take a minute to research his labor history, they would see how it directly opposes their livelihoods.
Back in the day when he still built things, he strenuously fought against unions, and he cheated, stiffed or sued suppliers who expected to be paid for their work. And still his companies hire the very undocumented and unskilled immigrants that he rails against, without union protection. And the cheap trinkets that his daughter and his name-brand companies sell are made exclusively overseas, where child labor and low wages are rampant.
His followers swallow the administration lies that fossil fuels are the future and hundreds of thousands of jobs depend on them; both of these statements are wrong. The letter stated, “We need a leader . . . who generally understands and represents the American worker.” The unions are correct; Mr. Trump is the problem. Mr. Trump only understands things that contribute to his bottom line, and he doesn’t care about anyone whose name isn’t Mr. Trump.

Two days ago, Katherine and I watched The Flying Scotsman (2006), which I own on DVD. Neither of us had seen it. The movie is about Graeme Obree, the Scotsman who broke the world hour record twice and won two track World Championships. Obree is now 54 years old.
