  • Well, I guess we know now that in addition to President Donald Trump being able to do anything he wants (including committing murder on Fifth Avenue), he also has a “get out of jail free” card, which he can use for his shady friend Roger Stone if he so chooses.

Can we say “liberty and justice for all”?

    Mary Jo Saviano, Kansas City

Note from KBJ: Mary Jo, meet Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution:

The President . . . shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.

Next time, do some research before you write.

  • With President Trump attempting to consolidate more and more power post-acquittal, the specter of his unwillingness to leave office in the event of his potential defeat in November becomes real. Based on past performance, he will simply claim that the voting was rigged and that he was the actual winner.

I would like to suggest that it is not too soon for Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker Nancy Pelosi to poll their Senate and House colleagues, respectively, to ask whether they intend to uphold the Constitution and oversee an orderly transition of power, or whether they intend to join their then-to-be former president in attempting to overthrow the duly elected one.

Before Trump’s 2016 election, the answer would have been obvious. Now, not so much.

Note from KBJ: "[C]laim[ing] that the voting was rigged and that he was the actual winner"? It sounds like you're describing Hillary Clinton, Nelson.

  • The droning whir of a news chopper echoed through our neighborhood all Tuesday afternoon, a constant, aggravating reminder that our most infamous resident was returning. President Donald Trump getting Rod Blagojevich released is perfect in its ugly synchronicity: one corrupt, ignorant, lazy, arrogant, egotist aiding another.

In many ways, Blagojevich is the Democratic version of Trump, a man who saw political office as nothing more than a way to soak in the spotlight and enrich himself at the expense of the public good. What a slap in the face for the prosecutors who worked so hard to convict the disgraceful ex-governor.

What a sad day for our neighborhood, our state and our country.

    — Lon Wehrle, Chicago

Note from KBJ: Donald Trump is making life better for millions of Americans, Lon. Why do you hate that? Do you not care about ordinary Americans? By the way, Blagojevich is a Democrat. Imagine how your head would explode if he were a Republican.
