  • While one might construe Michael A. Cohen’s summary statement in his May 5 column—“We’ve gone from George Washington saying ‘I cannot tell a lie’ to our current moment: a president who cannot tell the truth”—as stating the obvious, it’s essential that we continue to remind ourselves that this is the reality we are living with (“10,000 lies: another Trump milestone”). To do otherwise would help enable Don the con, a.k.a. President Trump, to continue eroding what should be a reasonable expectation of truth-telling in a president.

Normalizing lying is rooted in the psychological concept of habituation. As human beings, we react less with each successive lie. Eventually, only a real whopper would penetrate our awareness. We have arrived at a new normal with Trump. What might be more concerning than a president who cannot tell the truth is a president who, simply by virtue of being president, cannot possibly be called a liar. It is an ominous echo of Attorney General William Barr’s belief in the theory of the unitary executive—if the president does it, it can’t be illegal.

Note from KBJ: I’m still not aware of a single lie told by Donald Trump. Not one. The real liar was Barack Obama. Remember when he said you could keep your doctor? Remember when he said your health-insurance premium would go down by $2,500? Someone should do a study of why leftists project their own failings onto others.

  • James Comey is a disgrace to the FBI & will go down as the worst Director in its long and once proud history. He brought the FBI down, almost all Republicans & Democrats thought he should be FIRED, but the FBI will regain greatness because of the great men & women who work there!

  • Raising Arizona (1987)Yesterday evening, Katherine and I watched Raising Arizona (1987) for the second time in eight years. The movie is ridiculously zany. Sometimes it's lighthearted; sometimes it's dark. The final scene, which mentions Utah, went over my head. If anyone gets it, let me know.

    Here is the trailer.

  • There were two main conclusions of the Mueller report:

    1. Russia interfered extensively in the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump, even though it could not be proven that Mr. Trump or his team actively cooperated (“colluded”) with Russia. Vladimir Putin had plenty of reasons to interfere for his own benefit, with a score to settle with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a pro-Russian stance from Mr. Trump.

    2. Mr. Trump tried his hardest (and tried to get his staff to do the same) to quash the Mueller investigation. No obstruction? Mr. Trump later ranted about the Mueller report testimony (which he referred to as “lies” and “fake news”), except for the “no collusion” part. The testimony showing Mr. Trump’s dishonest character and deviousness was damning. And take note: These were Mr. Trump’s own people (lawyers, associates, appointees) testifying, but more important, under oath. What insight into Mr. Trump’s pitiful character.

It is sad that Trump Republicans (including the PG editorial board) want to just move on and give Mr. Trump a pass.

Hopefully Congress will work hard to secure the 2020 election in spite of Mr. Trump. Did Mr. Trump ever repudiate his belief in Mr. Putin’s “no interference” claim?
