Re “No gains for poor in school, study says: Achievement gap same 50 years later” (Metro, March 19): I’ve been working with first-generation and low-income students my entire professional career, and this research reflects my experience. The truth represented in this study is: If you’re poor, you stay poor.
Recently I was reminded of this when my job at Chelsea High School was eliminated. I teach college and career planning to students who desperately need that information, but I won’t be doing it in the fall. The fact is this megaliberal state doesn’t really care about the poor. This is how working-class and blue-collar workers end up voting for a lunatic who will only seek to take away everything they have.
Donald Trump is an evil man, but his evil is on the surface. As a secular minister, I will preach to anyone willing to listen: People with money and power—liberal or conservative—don’t want to give it up. These educational, spiritual, economic, judiciary, and health care structures are the very things that have kept the poor in chains for the past 50 years. I’m looking to break those chains, and I need help from others who will fight to do the same.
