President Donald Trump’s opening salvo in the upcoming trade wars has less to do with product dumping and trade inequity then it does his ongoing effort to cater to the knee-jerk instincts of his base.

The timing of the announcement, remarkably, coincides with the special election in Pennsylvania, formerly steel country. That he would choose to endanger the world’s economic recovery to score a win is yet another example of his ignorance of history and his willingness to value the success of his brand over the fortunes of the country.
