It's the responsibility of a state legislature to promote the health, safety, and welfare of its citizens. This is called the police power. The legislature of Arkansas concluded some time back that it's not in the best interests of children to be adopted by unmarried couples. The editorial board of the New York Times calls this bigotry, on the ground that the Arkansas law disqualifies homosexual couples from adopting. How does the board know what motivated the legislation? If it were bigotry, why are unmarried heterosexual couples disqualified? If the citizens of Arkansas don't want their children to be adopted by unmarried couples, they have every right to enact that policy through their elected representatives. It's none of the editorial board's business how Arkansans run their state.
