The editorial board of the New York Times supports a New Hampshire law that makes negligent outdoorspeople pay for their rescues. This is a good law, for it forces people to take responsibility for their actions. Why does the board not apply the principle more generally? Most health problems that require medical treatment are the result of negligence (or worse, recklessness). They are brought on by bad diets, lack of exercise, consumption of alcohol, and use of tobacco and other mind-altering substances. Your health is your responsibility. Mine is mine. It's called personal responsibility.
