I like Chris Smith's idea of a new "Contract with America." If Republicans had any sense (and leadership), they'd run for Congress in 2010 on the slogan, "Back to Basics." This means a return to American ideals of hard work, self-sufficiency, personal responsibility, savings, and charity. Government has gotten far too big. It is destroying incentive, promoting dependency, undermining self-respect, and rewarding misbehavior. People need to know that if they play by the rules, they will not be screwed by their elected representatives. Government should never transfer wealth from the responsible to the irresponsible, from the frugal to the profligate, from the productive to the unproductive, or from the law-abiding to the lawless (as in the case of illegal immigration). Republicans should not hesitate to distance themselves from George W. Bush, under whom government grew rather than shrank. Another possible slogan is, "We Are Not Europe (Thank Goodness)." If you have a slogan of your own, please submit it.
