To the Editor:

Re “Navy Rescues Captain, Killing 3 Pirate Captors” (front page, April 13):

At a time when we are questioning what has happened to our values as Americans, when doubt abounds about our national character and when vitriol is rampant, it is time to reflect on two shining examples of reassurance.

The actions of two civilian captains, Chesley B. Sullenberger III and Richard Phillips, remind us that courage, integrity and selflessness exist in great measure in our country. The calm response of the administration and the professionalism of the men and women of our Navy and other government departments give lie [sic] to those who were eager to find fault with any of them.

As we take pride in the actions of our fellow Americans, including the crew of the Maersk Alabama, we ought also to reflect that we are a better people when we stand with one another rather than merely oppose. We also ought to note that patience and intellect achieve tangible results while bluster and bravado are empty stagings.

Thanks to all involved in both successful outcomes, on the Hudson and the high seas, for reaffirming the highest ideals of humanity and the best that is America.
