To the Editor:

President Obama is to be commended for addressing a major issue at Notre Dame—not just abortion, but more important, tolerance.

Tolerance is arguably the most important value taught in higher education and religion as well. Too often, the fear of diversity and conflicting points of view has led to dogmatic censorship and civil violence.

It is refreshing to hear a president offer a lecture-sermon that appeals to our highest ideals, especially one whose own election represents a triumph of tolerance.
