President Obama has nominated federal appellate judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the United States Supreme Court. She is eminently qualified, just as Robert Bork was. I defended Bork when I was a progressive (in a published essay entitled "Should Robert Bork Be Confirmed?"), and I will defend Sotomayor now that I am a conservative. I am sick to death of confirmation battles, especially when they get personal (remember Clarence Thomas?). Presidential elections mean something. They mean that the victor gets to shape the Court. If conservatives don't like Judge Sotomayor, they should get their asses in gear and elect a conservative president.
Addendum: I take back everything I said. I just learned that Judge Sotomayor, who was born in the Bronx, is a fan of the New York Yankees. That alone disqualifies her from serving on the United States Supreme Court.
Addendum 2: Judge Sotomayor is Roman Catholic. That makes six Catholics on the Supreme Court (all but Justices Ginsburg, Breyer, and Stevens).
