To the Editor:
“G.M. Heads to Bankruptcy Protection as U.S. Steps In” (front page, June 1): This is one American taxpayer who could not be more pleased with our virtual nationalization of the American auto industry. Unbridled capitalism put our nation in its mess; thank heaven we have a brilliant and progressive young president to lead us to dry ground.
For decades, profits were put ahead of fuel efficiency and environmental protection. The Big Three’s response to skyrocketing oil imports and environmental degradation: Hummers, Suburbans and Excursions. And in the end, no profits.
Well, that’s all going to change. With the American people now the majority owner of General Motors, and holding a minority stake in Chrysler, cars will be built that are in the nation’s best interest.
It is a national disgrace that our government and corporate leaders allowed our auto industry to slip so far behind foreign competitors.
And that will change, too. Under our new president, we will once again lead the world in science and technology—laying the groundwork for a better, smarter American auto industry.
