  • Regarding “Trump gets it done” (Letters, Dec. 18): When American voters go to cast ballots for president in 2020, I doubt (as this letter writer believes) that they will view President Trump as simply a politician doing his job.

And while Trump supporters point to this president having engaged North Korea on nuclear weapons, Mexico on illegal immigration and NATO’s reluctance to pay its fair share of dues, his millions of detractors (myself included) see an obstreperous bully who has diminished this nation’s stature in the global community and damaged its alliances by insulting world leaders.

He has also, not surprisingly, exponentially increased this nation’s politically polarized environment by rejecting our three coequal branches system of government, attacking the free press, and childishly trying to diminish his opponents with name-calling (like Nervous Nancy Pelosi). After three long years of this constant drama, I’m ready to vote for a change in the Oval Office.

Note from KBJ: We're respected again by other nations, Xavier. That's one reason why we're going to re-elect President Trump. You'll get your "change in the Oval Office" five years from now.

  • Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to the VFW Post 128 in Beaver surprises me (Dec. 11, “Pence Stumps in Pa.”). I thought that veterans service organizations were supposed to be politically neutral. As we reflect at this time of year on the valor and sacrifices of our veterans on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, some veterans support a president who was a draft dodger, disrespects our prisoners of war, John McCain and Gold Star families. Mr. Trump has no respect for military ethics and rules of warfare in the Navy Seal case. He claimed bone spurs and failed to take the oath unlike those heroes at Omaha Beach and the Hurtgen Forest.

Mr. Pence remarked that this administration has done more for veterans than any in the past. This administration and all veterans, particularly those in Congress and on the Veterans Affairs committees, should draw their attention to supporting our military and their families, particularly in light of reports of mold, mildew and rodents in military housing units. Where is the money going? Did defense money go for the “wall”? We should be building new military housing instead of building a wall.

I hope that I don’t read that the VFW is going to have its next convention at the Mar-a-Largo Club in Florida or the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C. I heard that Donald Trump doesn’t pay his bills or honor his contracts.
