  • We recently received exciting news that we will become grandparents for the first time. However, our joy is tempered by the “live for today” attitude espoused by the current Trump administration.

First of all, we are spending our way to a fiscal disaster. The recent tax cut for the wealthy will add a trillion dollars to the deficit, and the CBO says our $21 trillion debt will spike to $33 trillion in 10 years. It will reach levels that could spark a debt crisis, in spite of Mr. Trump’s wild notion that the tax cut will pay for itself. The burden of solving this crisis will be laid at the feet of our children and grandchildren.

Secondly, our planet is in dire shape and this administration does not care. Mr. Trump is deregulating and scrapping environmental protections for the sole purpose of creating more jobs. He has gutted the EPA, pushed the use of coal, rolled back fuel mileage standards for cars, suspended the Clean Water Rule and withdrew from the Paris Climate agreement. The recently released UN scientific panel on climate change report describes a strong risk of crisis as early as 2040 if we fail to act.

If I do the math, my hope is that this child will live into the next century. But to have a chance to live a long and healthy life, we must elect leaders who genuinely care about future generations, and take the necessary and painful steps to save our country and our planet. Prayer couldn’t hurt either.

  • Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.

  • To the editor:

Heffernan’s column really hit home. I joined the Republican Party when Barry Goldwater told me he would keep government out of our pockets and out of our bedrooms.

Then Republicans decided they needed the religious right—never mind that science now came from scripture and intolerance became a new family value.

Then Republicans decided they needed lots of money, so along came Citizens United—never mind that candidates were now owned by special interests.

Then Republicans decided it was worth sacrificing progress to ensure that Barack Obama was a one-term president—never mind that gridlock became the new norm.

Now Republicans have thrown away any moral compass or fiscal conservatism to keep a man in office who is unfit to be there—never mind that they were humiliated into sycophancy.

Republicans: It’s time to abandon ship. There has to be something better than this.

  • Best Jobs Numbers in the history of our great Country! Many other things likewise. So why wouldn’t we win the Midterms? Dems can never do even nearly as well! Think of what will happen to your now beautiful 401-k’s!

  • On cold, rainy days, I worry about dogs, not cats. Most cats live inside; many dogs live outside. No cats are kept in back yards. No cats are tied to pet houses with ropes or chains. Outdoor cats can find a dry, cozy place to curl up. It should be illegal to tie a dog to a fence or pet house.
