In response to Chris Seibel's letter ("This president of ours," March 12) comparing President Donald Trump to President Theodore Roosevelt, I must say this is an inexcusable insult to Roosevelt.
Roosevelt was a decorated war hero for the Spanish-American War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his part in the Battle of San Juan Heights. Trump was deferred for easily treatable bone spurs.
Roosevelt embraced government regulations of industry and consumer protection. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was enacted in his administration. Trump is determined to roll back protections, and is slashing regulations governing the financial sector that were set in place after the recession of 2008.
Roosevelt was a conservationist. He reserved lands for public use and added to our national forests. Trump is trying to sell off public lands and national monuments so they can be eviscerated by private interests. Trump is also rolling back legislation protecting our air and waterways.
The building of the Panama Canal was started under Roosevelt's administration, and he also initiated the Great White Fleet Goodwill Tour. Trump is an isolationist, enacting disastrous tariffs and insulting our allies.
Roosevelt was a very learned individual and published 25 books on a wide variety of subjects. Trump can't be bothered to read his daily briefing, and gets his information from Fox News.
Both presidents had flamboyant speech techniques, but this is where the similarities end.
