  • This is my last letter to The Star. I have written many letters. Some you print, some you don’t. In every case I have tried to address serious subjects in a serious way. Usually, I am prompted by something in the news.

I can’t do it any longer. The news is no longer serious, and the people in the news are even less so. For example, in Missouri we have a governor who allegedly bound his girlfriend and threatened her. And his party is defending him.

And a president of the United States wants to arm teachers and give them bonuses for substituting as Green Berets, when they’re not trying to get their students’ attention otherwise.

  • Our Steel and Aluminum industries (and many others) have been decimated by decades of unfair trade and bad policy with countries from around the world. We must not let our country, companies and workers be taken advantage of any longer. We want free, fair and SMART TRADE!

  • My thoughts exactly. The Left doesn't want debate; it wants conquest. Since at least the days of Cindy Sheehan (remember her?), the Left has tried to find individuals who have suffered losses. These individuals are vested with absolute moral authority on the matter at hand. This means that they may not be questioned, criticized, or challenged in any way. We must simply listen to them and obey their decrees. Our sympathy is to be transformed into mindless obedience.

Sorry, leftists. That's not how it works in a free society such as ours. The students in Florida have a right to speak their minds, obviously, but the rest of us have a right (indeed, a duty) to disagree with them, to find fault with their reasoning, to dispute their factual assertions, and to show that they are being funded, instructed, and otherwise propped up by agitators. There are no moral authorities in our society, and there are certainly no absolute moral authorities.

  • What do President Donald Trump and millions of know-it-alls sitting in every tavern across America have in common? They can solve any problem, no matter how complex, in one simple sentence. Mexicans crossing your border? Build a wall. Kids being slaughtered by guns in school? Arm all the teachers. North Korea annoying you? Bomb it off the map.

And now Trump has even bested all the tavern blowhards. How? By saying that, even if he was unarmed, he would have entered the Parkland, Fla., school and confronted the shooter. Yes, this same Washington superhero, despite ailing from bone spurs and five draft deferments, would have single-handedly taken on the gunman. No word on whether the bullets would bounce off his invincible NRA vest.

Now, if Trump were sitting at the bar and said that, we’d assume it was the beer talking. However, this guy was bragging in front of our country’s governors, who responded by saying . . . nothing. God help us all.

  • Why is A.G. Jeff Sessions asking the Inspector General to investigate potentially massive FISA abuse. Will take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc. Isn’t the I.G. an Obama guy? Why not use Justice Department lawyers? DISGRACEFUL!
